May Day is Lei Day in Hawaii!

Hawaii 2009 Lei Day

Hawaii 2009 Lei Day

Hawaii’s Lei Day Festival includes lei-making contests, games, crafts and food. Afterwards, the finished leis are taken to the tombs of the royal ali’i as offerings. The Great Kamehameha can hold thousands of leis and proudly displays them with grace. May 1, 1928, was the first Lei Day of Hawaii, honoring the art and history of making lei’s. Hawaii loves her holidays and festivities!

No Regrets!

Pure bliss

Pure bliss

Being from Maui, I’ve absorbed what the meaning of the aloha spirit really means. You give more than you take, and you treat everyone like family, like your own ohana. We’re all connected and responsible for each other. It’s a loving way to live your life. It infuses creativity and vitality in your day to day and encourages gratitude.

That’s how I tried to treat my business; all my clients and employees were family. I also tried to challenge myself and exceed my business goals and take it to a new height.  It’s also like watching your children grow up and create their own rich life that far exceeds the dreams you dreamt for them.

As for myself, I made my own way in life the best I knew at the time, which is probably why I always want the best for everybody. Looking back I should ‘a, could ‘a, would ‘a, doesn’t matter. I’m a work in progress, we all are. If it wasn’t for the mistakes that I have made, I would not have persevered and conquered some of my hardest challenges. So, if I can show other people a path to accomplish their dreams by starting their own business and they learn to do it faster, better and more successful than I did, then right on, I’m stoked.

I just hope we all remember that it’s our belief in ourselves that brought us to this path of entrepreneurship in the first place. That same high level of confidence and self esteem will also propel us forward when we are faced with obstacles and negativity. So, when a client disagrees with your methods, argues for a cheaper rate, complains of poor service and generally treats you as if you’re less than, ho’omanao, remember your truth and inner promise to yourself that you won’t let anyone cause self-doubt. Trust your choices and your wisdom and assume that their negativity is like a sickness that consumes them. It is not your reality, or what consumes you, so carry on and let them go if you cannot compromise toward a solution. Live true and live without regret.

Aloooooohaaaa!

The Endurance of a Business Owner

There are multiple reasons, beliefs and personal convictions that act as anchors during the entrepreneurs’ hardest challenges and decisions in their professional career. Imagine the gift of being free and liberated to do as you wish in your own cleaning business. That same business that enriches your life personally and financially, allows you to offer great service to your customers and solid employment and growth to your staff. That same freedom-giving train can potentially fall off its tracks if it’s not properly cared and maintained for. The possibility of everything crashing all around is the silent dirty little secret that a lot of business owners fear.

Here are several practical guide-posts that have been useful for many successful entrepreneurs. Business owners that strived to live out their dreams and create their own destiny and ultimately defy the odds of many to live the life of a few.

Encouragement:

Possessing a deep knowledge of self awareness, confidence and self-esteem allows one the ability to salve their own wounds and push on when things seem unclear or negative.

Focus:

To behold great passion is the torch of all creative souls. Having clarity throughout ones life, especially in business is magical. Using that drive and ambition is an electrifying force that acts as their true north.

Strategy:

This should be referred to as your business’ vehicle. The catapult is what will bring your goals into better viewing and eventually materialize. Choose the medium that best suits your business, organization and team.

Planning:

I love the mantra or the slogan; be, do and act. That’s the epitome of a plan, it’s quintessential. From being, one can create the dream or desired outcome. From the doing, one learns different measures of success and builds on the experience. And finally, from acting, success shines through more and more and cause and effect is in full force. The degree of congruency is refined and sharpened for accuracy, repetition and feedback.

Gratitude:

The most generous response to give someone is to say mahalo, thank you. Embodying gratitude is an appraisal of yourself being exactly where you need to be at the right time, at the right place and with the right people. Being grateful with what you have in your life is like a stepping stone to feeling happy, open-mined, non-judgmental and easy going. That is when the best business opportunities seem to manifest which naturally perpetuates more feelings of gratitude. Thus, another angle to the law of attraction.

Detachment:

Peace of mind and clarity are the main benefits of living with detachment. To let go does not mean to be irresponsible, but only to let go of the controlling mindset of the ego. To assume and superimpose that there can only be one acceptable effect or outcome, completely cuts off any of the other infinite possibilities that one cannot begin to imagine. There are so many nuances that one must keep the ego out of the equation at this juncture.

Through all these different layers, or guide posts, developing and building on ones confidence is key. Doing so will enable our natural abilities to expand as we are faced with challenges and simultaneously, also raise our standards and re-group for yet another cycle. So, with all due respect, mahalo a nui loa to everyone and a me ke aloha pau ole!

Exceeding the Business Model

People are cool and unique creatures. What works perfect for you, may not work exactly the same way for me when human factors come into play. Generally, anyone can duplicate someone’s business model and accomplish similar plateaus. The greatest challenge is to utilize your own special skills and talents to optimize the system or model and exceed the current results.

I’ve seen this happen over and over again with my own business and with my cleaning guide that I wrote. As for my own business, some of my employees have gone on to start their own businesses and used some of the principles that I valued and instilled within our cleaning service as a foundation for theirs. I couldn’t be happier for them. Two of the girls created a partnership and started a modern way of doing business. They started a day care center annex to their cleaning business as an added benefit and convenience for their employees. She took a look around at some of the reasons why some employees couldn’t work or was late due to not having safe and reliable day care for their children. They analyzed an age old problem and took the resolve to manage it so effectively that they’re well known as a great company to work for. They even have a 6-month waiting list for new hires! They have solid employees that are actually happy to go to work and all they have to do is promote the company’s services and grow; the sky’s the limit!

As for people utilizing my book, “The Maui Guide to a Successful Cleaning Business”, I’ve received a lot of touching and amazing letters and emails from some very happy and successful business owners. From married couples getting out of the rat race and spending all their time together growing their business and planning their future to retire young; to others that are single parents like me and have surpassed my own monthly income! Some have learned how to manage the business so efficiently right from the beginning that they never had to start out cleaning themselves. They acquired enough clients to warrant hiring someone right away, which gave her the time to promote and grow the business with her children at her side.

Being from Maui and loving the culture and the people, I’ve absorbed what the meaning of the aloha spirit really means. You give more than you take, and you treat everyone like family. We’re all connected and responsible for each other. It’s a loving way to live your life. That’s how I tried to treat my business; all my clients and employees were family. So, in regards to the earlier statement about the innate challenge to exceed a business model and take it to a new height, it’s also like watching your children grow up to create their own rich lives that far exceeds your own dreams for them. So, as a mother, a business owner or writer, I really want the best for everybody. I made my own way in life the best I knew at the time. Looking back I should ‘a, could ‘a, would ‘a, doesn’t matter. I’m a work in progress. But, if I can show other people a path to accomplish their dreams, and they can do it faster, better and more intelligently than I did, then right on!
